Brain Injury
Services
Putnam ARC (PARC) has
been providing services to hundreds of individuals with developmental
disabilities and mental retardation since 1954.
In 1993, a Family Support
Services Grant was awarded to PARC to begin providing formalized services to
individuals who have sustained brain injuries (traumatic/acquired). Funding
has continued and now, PARC, in cooperation with the Office of Mental
Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD), the New York State
Department of Health (NYS DoH), and the Brain Injury Association of New York
State (BIANYS), Putnam ARC provides the following to persons with brain
injury:
FACTS Program/Family
Advocacy, Counseling, Training offered to individuals and families of
persons who have sustained head injuries prior to the age of 22. This program
is run in cooperation with the BIANYS and OMRDD, and as it states, provides
advocacy, counseling and training to individuals, families and significant
others. No benefit entitlements are required to participate in this program.
Medicaid Service
Coordination (MSC) offered to individuals who are Medicaid eligible and
have sustained his/her head injury prior to the age of 22. Individuals can
receive MSC as either a straight Medicaid service or as a waiver service
through the OMRDD (Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental
Disabilities) Waiver Program. (see Service Coordination for complete
details).
NYS DoH TBI Waiver Services
are inclusive of service coordination and specific program services.
Individuals must be Medicaid eligible and, in most instances, should have
sustained the head injury between the ages of 22 and 65. In limited
instances, persons between the ages of 18 and 21 may also be eligible.
Parameters for this program are very specific.
Private Pay Options are
available to individuals who are not eligible for desired services under any
of the options outlined above. Contact Josephine Todaro directly for further
information.
Currently, PARC offers two
brain injury monthly support groups (Dutchess and Ulster counties) and is
available to individuals, families, significant others professionals and
interested parties. This opportunity allows for sharing of experiences and
networking. A weekly group runs in ten-week sessions in Carmel, NY.
Professional trainings can also be arranged.
In addition to these programs,
persons with brain injuries may access vocational evaluation, educational
advocacy, information/referral, and counseling. A consulting
neurophysiologist is available in order to effectively assess individuals and
plan for the delivery of appropriate services.
