PARC leaders, advocates, and family members participated in the 23th Annual Legislative Forum for People with Disabilities on Saturday, April 8, 2017. The event was hosted at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, NY and was moderated by Putnam County Legislator and Chairwoman of the Health, Social, Educational, and Environmental Committee Barbara Scuccimarra.
Representatives from Federal, New York State, and Putnam County government were in attendance to hear from residents in the Putnam County community.
A number of issues and concerns were raised during the forum including increased pay for direct care workers, housing needs, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training updates for Putnam County, autism support services, better transportation, and mental health and addiction services.
Self-Advocate Athena Lightcap (pictured below, left) spoke to the legislators about the #bfair2directcare campaign and insisted that "her" staff members and all direct care workers be paid a living wage.
Congratulations to Residential Manager Caitlyn DiLena and PARC Program Participant and Self Advocate Jason McDonnell for accepting PARC's annual Legislative Proclamation on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. DiLena and McDonnell represented PARC at the ceremony because they were the 2016 winners of the year-long “100 Club” awards.
The Putnam County Legislature honored the month of March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and the month of April as Autism Awareness Month. County Legislator Paul Jonke presented the certificate to DiLena and McDonnell.
