PARC is one of 50 chapters of NYSARC, Inc. (formally New York State Association for Retarded Children, Inc.), and is at the forefront in providing advocacy and programming for children and adults with developmental disabilities within the geographic region of Putnam County along with Northern Westchester and Southern Dutchess counties.

PARC was recognized as a chapter of NYSARC, INC., a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, in 1954 through the efforts of ten families who sought services for their young children who were not protected by legislation ensuring equal education. In 1972, PARC served twelve adults and thirteen children with a total budget of $25,000. A major player in the deinstitutionalization process, PARC currently employs 450 staff and has grown to be the lead provider of services to over 650 people from birth through advanced age, and their families, in Putnam County.

Programs and services provided by PARC include Residential Programs, Preschool, , Educational Services, After school Programs, Day Habilitation, Vocational Rehabilitation, Work Readiness, Community Employment, Clinic Services, Educational Advocacy, Service Coordination, Traumatic Brain Injury Network, Guardianship, In-Home Residential Habilitation, Community Recreation, “Lend a Hand” Volunteer Program, Respite Programs, Self Advocacy Groups, and Adult Education.

 

PARC has received numerous awards for excellence and program services and has earned the respect and support of many local business leaders, politicians, and area non-profit agencies. PARC is affiliated with New York State Association for Retarded Children (NYSARC), the Office or Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD), the Taconic Developmental Disabilities Office, the Governor’s Office for Small Cities, Putnam County School Districts, VESID, and the Department of Social Services.

Our competent and dedicated board members and staff are committed to working in partnership with children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families in providing advocacy and comprehensive person centered services of the highest quality. We continually strive to promote and enhance opportunities for those individuals we support as valued members of our community.

Program staff provides the support and the environment which each individual needs to utilize unique talents and achieve his or her goals. Individual pride shines through when people are given the power to demonstrate the ability to make choices and to exercise some control over his or her life, goals and future.
